I think that Ellen Klages did a phenomenal job in her research. She did spend a while in Alamagordo, New Mexico doing research. The damns were appropriate in this book because Dewey and Suze were in 8th grade, where language is used on a daily basis. They did say *itch in the first book. I loved this book and reccomend it for anyone.
*sorry if this might be a bit protective, but i'm really close to the author.*Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-227580782059501910.post-11503462226760046792008-07-16T14:32:00.000-05:002008-07-16T14:32:00.000-05:00Thanks for the review! I *loved* The Green Glass Sea, too.

I'm getting my degree in Library Science, but my minor is Linguistics, and I have to comment about the language you cited.

"Lame" in the sense of stupid or useless, is from the 1940s. "Nifty" is even earlier, and "cooks with gas" was first used in the 1920s, but was popularized in the 1940s when gas stoves became more affordable.

So it sounds like the author *did* do her research. One of the things that I appreciated most about the first book was how very accurate the language was -- it's the sort of thing a word-nerd notices first.

As for the damns and hells -- how old are Dewey and Suze in this book? They must be 13 or 14, right? That seems appropriately "rebellious" language for that age.

Sigh. I guess I'll have to wait until October to judge for myself.

But your review moved White Sands... even higher on my "want" list.

Thanks,

JaniceUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17801065622744231322noreply@blogger.com
